This year's conference is very special as it celebrates the 20th anniversary of the foundation of AsiaTEFL. For the past 20 years, AsiaTEFL conferences have been held annually in various Asian countries (10!), where ELT practitioners, policymakers and researchers have gathered together to share their academic and scholarly works and knowledge, and to shape global networks and bonds. This year's theme, ‘Celebrating ELT in Asia: Visions and Aspirations', was set to suggest visions for and aspirations of ELT in Asian contexts by reflecting on heated discussion over the past years, examining the present issues and topics, and anticipating the future of ELT in Asia. In pursuit of this aim, we invited very special speakers from diverse Asian countries and beyond. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the speakers who cordially accepted our invitation. Please join us in whole-heartedly welcoming keynote speaker Youngsuk YS Chi, the President of Elsevier, and the six plenary speakers, Prof. Jihyeon Jeon from Korea, Prof. Phyllis Lian-Ghim Chew from Singapore, Prof. Peter de Costa from USA, Prof. Andy Gao from Australia, Prof. Francisca Maria Ivone from Indonesia, and Prof. Tariq Elyas from Saudi Arabia. A warm welcome is also extended to our seven featured speakers, Prof. Masaki Oda from Japan, Prof. Qirfang Wen from China, Prof. Pragasit Sitthitikul from Thailand, Prof. Ramesh Nair from Malaysia, Prof. Jeongyeon Kim from Korea, Prof. Aurelio Vilbar from Philippines, and Dr. John Norris. Not only do these speakers offer geographically-diverse perspectives, but their years of scholarship in wide-ranging fields of ELT provide deep insights for all.
In addition to the invited speakers' talks, the program will offer multiple types of presentations, including research-driven papers, workshops, colloquia/symposia and poster sessions. We are deeply grateful to the presenters who submit their proposals responding to our conference call and share their research outcomes and insightful ideas with all conference participants.
Many thanks should be given to the 2023 Conference Organizing Committee, who volunteered their assistance to make the conference a success again this year. And last but certainly not least, we would like to express special thanks to the AsiaTEFL presidents, Prof. Suwarsih Madya and Prof. Joo-Kyung Park, whose tremendous energy and devotion dedicated to the entire process of organization of the conference have enriched this meaningful event with their meticulous consideration and wealth of experience.
As we overcome the challenges of the pandemic, this year's conference will be organized mainly on-site, but we still offer opportunities for virtual presentations and online participation for those who can access only from a distance. We cordially invite students, practitioners and researchers working in the field of ELT in Asia and beyond. Please come join us to celebrate the 20thanniversary of AsiaTEFL and enjoy a rich program filled with insightful presentations!
We are honored to have been invited to serve as conference executives for the 21st AsiaTEFL International Conference. Please feel free to contact us with your ideas & suggestions, your concerns, and your offers to help!
With warm welcome

Daejeon Metropolitan City is at the heart of South Korea, a science and education hub at the center of the nation.
How to Arrive?
Korea has a number of world-class international airports. Incheon International Airport (ICN) consistently wins prizes as Asia's top connection/arrival center. Seoul/Gimpo International Airport (GMP) is the classic "near to the capital city" airport and has numerous flights to/from major cities across Asia. We recommend either of these. Cheongju International Airport (CJJ) is closer to Daejeon, but has few flights and limited transit options into Daejeon. Gimhae International Airport in Busan (PUS) or Daegu International Airport (TAE) may be an economical flight for those coming from Japan or China. All but Cheongju has easy access to Korea excellent rail system and intercity busses.
If arriving at Incheon Airport during daytime hours, you may find the Daejeon Convention Center Concierge Desk at Incheon International Airport convenient.
From Incheon, there are two options to Daejeon:
Travel Inside Daejeon Inside Daejeon, there is a subway/metro which travels from Daejeon Train Station, but does not go all the way to Daejeon Convention Center.
City Bus drivers do not speak English, and while there are announcements in English and English signs, when the busses are crowded it's easy to miss your destination. We recommend using a taxi.
A taxi from either train station to Daejeon convention center should cost approximately 9,000KRW (Korean Won, roughly US$7.50) except in high-traffic congestion. Taxi drivers rarely speak English, but if you say "Daejeon Convention Center" slowly and clearly, they will understand. As for other destinations, get the name and street address (in Korean) on your phone or paper to show them.
Daejeon Station, West (Seo) Daejeon Station, and Daejeon Express Bus Terminal are not adjacent, and not comfortable walking distance.
Google Maps are less useful in Korea than in most other countries (data secrecy laws) but you may still find it helpful.
Uber, Grab, and other "Call cars" are not available in Korea. The apps to call taxis in Korea are not available to non-residents. It can be difficult to hail a taxi during commute or very late night hours. If you need a taxi, plan to pick one up from a hotel or restaurant where they can call one for you.
There is a surcharge in taxis for late night service (after midnight). Note the Black Taxis - these are Deluxe Service taxis (Mobum), and cost about 20% more. There are also Van Taxis (same price as Deluxe) that can carry 8 or more, but typically must be called for.

Currency
Major foreign currencies that can be exchanged at banks, hotels, and the airport include the US Dollar, Japanese Yen, Euro, and UK Sterling. Most hotels, tourists' restaurants, and shops accept major international credit cards including Visa, American Express, Diners Club, Master Card, and JCB.
Money Exchange Foreign currency, including US Dollars, is generally not accepted in Korea except at a few high-end hotels.
In general, neighborhood banks are reluctant to change money for non-locals.
Travelers checks (cheques) are not widely accepted.
Change your money at the Airport! (These may close before midnight and no re-open until 7am, and can be found near departures/ticketing if you don't find them after immigration.
Foreign credit cards are accepted at many department stores and hotels, but might not be accepted in local shops or restaurants.
Please note: AsiaTEFL cannot accept cards or foreign currencies at the Convention Center.
ATM (Automated Teller Machines)
Travelers who carry internationally recognized credit cards can get a cash advance in Korea Won from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) installed at airports, major hotels, department stores, subway stations and tourist attractions. Foreign-issued ATM cards not under the Visa or Master Card label may have limited use. ATMs are in operation 24 hours a day (with occasional exceptions for bank management, that typically on Sunday around midnight). Most large stores, hotels and restaurants in Korea accept major international credit cards. However, it is advisable to carry some cash, since many smaller establishments and stores are unlikely to accept credit cards.
Cellphone Service -- SIM Card Purchase (Korea SIM card)
Travelers can purchase a SIM (USIMM) card to insert in their personal cell phone device. Both data service and no-data /voice and text only plans are available. "Unlimited Data" or limited data plans are available. These prepaid SIM cards usually cost less than roaming services from your home country. SIM cards can be purchased at CU and 7-Eleven convenience stores at Incheon International Airport, and at various other locations inside the international terminals of Incheon, Gimpo, and Pusan airports.
Internet
Korea is famous for Ubiquitous and Fast Internet. Free Wireless Internet service (Wifi) is often provided in public places such as airports, train stations, and bus terminals in Korea. Free Public Wifi is also available near some ordinary bus stops, and on many public buses and trains (including most subways). PC rooms ("bangs") and internet cafes are also great places to go and they are mostly open 24 hours. PC rooms usually are equipped with game-quality systems, comfortable chairs, and casual foods such as Ramyeon (ramen), and typically cost less than US$3 per hour. But printers are generally not available.
Daejeon Convention Center offers free guest Wifi and so do most hotels. Convention Center speeds will probably not be adequate for streaming video (due to the large number of users). There is no "business center" for attendees at Daejeon Convention Center, and few hotels in Korea offer this service.
Electrical
Korea uses a 220v/60hz non-grounded (un-earthed) power supply, with twin round-pin outlet. Most larger hotels will have a few adapters for the "American-style" twin parallel plug, but do not offer power transformers from 100-115 volts.
While most lightweight consumer electronics are now "free-volt" systems that can accept 110v-50cycle up to 240v, CHECK YOUR DEVICE before plugging anything in.

Presenter Tips Presenter Tips
Please remember that conference participation is more than “I presented my paper.” Your fellow conference presenters will appreciate you joining their sessions, and providing thoughtful feedback that will assist them in developing their papers, their general scholarship, and their classroom/presentation performance. (“Congratulations” are always appreciated too!!)
For those who have more than one presentation scheduled, you are responsible for identifying any time conflicts and reporting it to the conference organizers prior to August 1st, so that corrections can be made.
We strongly encourage you to make your session interactive.
Online feedback (chatrooms) is planned, still in development. (Check back later on this, please!)

Onsite (In-Person) Presentations
Onsite presenters present in person at the schedule time at the venue. However, all onsite presenters must also provide pre-recorded videos for our online participants. The Onsite (In Person) presenters' videos will be played on the online conference platform at the same time as their onsite presentations. See guidelines for Online Presentation and Video Production and Submission, below. Please note that computers at Daejeon Convention Center will be equipped with a Windows computer featuring a recent version of Microsoft Office (a Korean version, so be sure your Powerpoint doesn't have any double-byte characters from your home language – even a [space] can appear very differently).
Online Presentation As a “hybrid conference,” all presentations can be viewed online. This means that all onsite presenters must also submit a pre-recorded video, just as our online presenters do. Pre-recorded videos are displayed according to a schedule, and the videos for In-Person sessions will be played at the time of the Onsite session.
